The exhibition of art works of young artists from Rio Grande do Sul, which is now presented in the Gallery of Czech Centers, is the first and yet unique opportunity for the Czech public to learn more about this corner of Brazil, with which the Czech Republic keeps historical and cultural bonds and personal ties.

South Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul became the new home of many Europeans since the second half of the 19th century. There is also the second largest Czech expatriate community in Brazil, and the tradition of so-called bohêmios, descendants of German-speaking immigrants from today's Czech Republic, is still preserved.  For example painter František Pelíšek, born in Kutná Hora became a president of the Czechoslovak association in Port Alegre in 1931, or František Vladimír Lorenz, a Czech linguist and esperantist, also acted in Rio Grande do Sul. Today, the Czech presence in Rio Grande de Sul is strengthened by the Honorary Consulate in Porto Alegre, teaching the Czech language in Porto Alegre and Nova Petrópolis nearly two hundredintersted people, and by activities of two compatriot associations or by cooperation between the Federal University of Porto Alegre and CTU (Czech Technical University).

The Memorandum of Understanding , which was signed between the Czech Republic and Rio Grande do Sul in 2015, became a natural patronage of bilateral historical ties, on the other hand there was an intensification of mutual relations both in political, economic and cultural spheres. Less than a year after the signing of the Memorandum, the first institutional and business mission of the state of Rio Grande do Sul to the Czech Republic took place, and in the autumn of 2017, a follow-up incoming mission is being prepared to focus on specific topics of cooperation.

The audience in Rio Grande do Sul had a number of opportunities in the last few years to get to know the Czech Republic and its culture through cinematography, documentary photography, literature or projects focused on the history of our country. Their realization was mainly due to the personal engagement of Secretary of State for the Culture of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Mr. Victor Hugo, Director of the Contemporary Art Museum in Porto Alegre, Mr. Paul C. Amaral and Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Porto Alegre, Mr. Fernando Lorenzo de Azeveda, which we owe huge thanks for their support.
