Czech That Film Will Not Be Burnt by Coronavirus: 9th Year of the Czech Film Festival Was Launched Online in North America

The “Czech That Film” festival started on Monday 27 April 2020 – despite the coronavirus pandemic. The ninth year is marked by a fundamental change. Over the next few weeks, all films will be gradually available to the American audiences exclusively via the internet. The original twenty cities in the USA and Canada where the festival was supposed to take place have now extended “thanks to” coronavirus and the selection of six Czech films will be available to viewers across America. The festival is organized by Czech Centres and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in cooperation with foreign representative offices and partners.

In cooperation with DAFilms VOD (Video On Demand) platform, the festival website (www.czechthatfilm.com) will each week present one film, which can be viewed after a fee has been paid. The first film was Staříci (Old-Timers) including a short interview with the directors Martin Dušek and Ondřej Provazník. The playlist also includes the following films: Karel, já a ty (Karel, Me and You), directed by Bohdan Karásek, Klec (The Cage), directed by Jiří Strach, Na střeše (On the Roof), directed by Jiří Mádl, Přes prsty (Overfingers), directed by Petr Kolečko, and Hra (The Play), directed by Alejandro Fernández Almendras.

ONDŘEJ ČERNÝ, GENERAL DIRECTOR OF CZECH CENTRES:

Czech That Film Festival is the flagship of our presentation activities in the area of filmmaking for North American audiences. Each year the festival has taken place in more than twenty cities in the US and Canada. This year however, we had to adapt to the current situation and we bring Czech film online to the viewers’ homes. I do believe that by moving the festival to the online environment we will attract new audiences across America. Including those who would not go to traditional cinema.”

DIANA TABAKOV, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DAFILMS:
“We are closely following the situation in America and although we know that the online world will never fully replace authentic experience of a real cinema, we are glad that together with Czech Centres we have found a way to remain close to culture even in these difficult days. The Global DAFilms VOD portal located in Prague has been in service for 15 years and has audiences in many American cities.”

The information about this Czech film event is spread primarily through the social networks of Czech That Film (Facebook and Instagram), Czech Center New York, Representative Offices of the Czech Republic in Washington and Ottawa, General Consulates of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles, Chicago and Toronto, and other local partners. Regarding its extent, the festival is an exceptional event. Thanks to Czech That Film the American audiences have the opportunity to watch some of the recent works of Czech cinematography.

Each year, the festival has been visited by over 6,000 viewers in all presentation venues.
