Architecture for Diplomacy

Exhibition of the winning designs of a student architectural competition for an embassy of the future.

Architecture for Diplomacy is a long-term project of the Czech Centre London and Czech Embassy in London stimulating discussion with a creative focus on mutual inspiration between architecture and modern diplomacy in the 21st century.

A panel discussion took place in July 2004, fuelled by a summary of questionnaires filled in by politicians as well as architects (e.g. Anne Pringle, UK Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Jiří Dienstbier, former Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs or Peter Finch, Head of the Estate Strategy Unit, FCO).

The outcome of the discussion served as part of a brief for an open ideas competition for Czech and British students of architecture for a design of an embassy of the future which was launched in October 2004. Students of all five Czech architectural schools took part in the competition as well as students from Bartlett School of Architecture, Architectural Association School of Architecture, Manchester School of Archi- tecture, University of Central England and University of Strathclyde.

In February 2005, all 60 submitted designs were judged by a jury panel consisting of HE Štefan Füle, embassador of the Czech Republic to the UK; Robert Booth, editor of Building Design; Anthony McGuirk, Head of Architectural Profession at Building Design Partnership and Ruth Slavid, acting editor of the Architect’s Journal. The jury chose the overall winner as well as the winner of the Ambassador‘s Premium, which was announced in connection with the upcoming reconstruction of the Czech embassy building in London.

The exhibition is guaranteed to provide its viewers with fresh and original answers to dilemmas that architects of today are faced with, when asked to accommodate modern diplomacy in their designs, respond to the challenges of globalisation, the communications revolution and the war against terrorism.
