Burning Bush

Burning Bush, a Czech film by director Agnieszka Holland, will be presented in its Korean premier on 2nd May at the 15th Jeonju International Film Festival. The movie recounts the events connected to the self-immolation of Jan Palach in 1969. The screening will be introduced by the lead actress Tatiana Pauhofová, who accepted the invitation of JIFF and whose visit is co-organized by the Czech Centre Seoul and Seoul Office of CzechTourism. The projection will be also accompanied by a special exhibition Jan Palach ’69.

Burning Bush was produced as a three-part miniseries by HBO Europe and since then has been aired in 15 countries across Europe, sold to more 8 countries including Italy, France and Northern Europe, and will be shown in US theatres soon. Based on actual events and characters, this drama focuses on the self-sacrifice of a student, Jan Palach, who set himself on fire in a protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1969. It is highly acclaimed by both critics and journalists and earned numerous awards. Among other achievements in the Czech Republic, it was awarded 11 prizes by the Czech Film Academy and the scriptwriter Stepan Hulik won the RWE Prize for the Discovery of the Year. Most recently the film received the CIGNIS Grand Prize at the Hongkong International Film Festival.

The Korean audience will have their first opportunity to see Burning Bush at this year’s JIFF. Also, after the premiere a GV with the lead actress, Tatiana Pauhofova, will follow. The heroic act of Jan Palach, its background and legacy will be described by a special exhibition Jan Palach ’69. This exhibition was created the 40th anniversary of the self-immolation of Jan Palach, which were organized by the Faculty of Arts, Charles University together with the National Museum, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Security Services Archives.
