Janáček String Quartet Tour in Korea

The Czech Centre Seoul and the ProArt Company cordially invite you to the Korean concert tour of the leading Czech ensemble Janáček String Quartet, which builds a good reputation of Czech music all over the world. In three Korean cities the Czech musicians will perform music of the most significant Czech composers as Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana and Leoš Janáček. The first concert takes place in Daejeon on 19th of April and two days later a performance with piano soloist and the winner of many domestic and foreign musical competitions Jung Hee Park follows. The Korean tour will be finished on 25th of April by the concert in Seoul, where the Czech ensemble will appear with a Rumanian piano soloist Emanuela Geamanu.

The Janáček String Quartet, which belongs to the leading Czech chamber ensemble today, got the credit for its music during a couple of decades. It was founded in 1947 by students of the Brno Conservatoire: Jiří Trávníček (1st violin), Miroslav Matyáš (2nd violin), Jiří Kratochvíl (viola) and Karel Krafka (violoncello). In the following two years the musicians proved their abilities and started to use the name of the Czech composer Leoš Janáček. At the beginning of fifties the ensemble became a part of the Brno Region Symphony Orchestra and few years later a chamber ensemble of the newly established Brno State Philharmonic. During a long time of its existence the quartet had to make necessary personal changes. The membership in the ensemble was quite a prestigious post. Therefore it was usually passed from the master on to the disciple. At present the quartet consists of Miloš Vacek (1st violin), Vítězslav Zavadilík (2nd violin), Jan Řezníček (viola) and Břetislav Vybíral (violoncello). By performing not only the works of the Czech composers but also the works of German Romantics, French impressionists and contemporary composers the Janáček String Quartet won recognition of the ordinary listeners on one side and musical critics on the other side. During nearly seventy years of its existence the ensemble has released over 50 albums for different music publishing companies, performed in concert halls all over the world, participated in many significant music festivals, recorded music for films and gained numerous prestigious awards in Czech and abroad (Region Award of Leoš Janáček in 1956; Brno Liberation Award in 1962; Award  of the Union of Czechoslovakian Composers in 1966; Supraphon Music Publishing Award for the Best Record in 1969; National Award in 1979; Grand Prix du Disque in 1964 and 1965; Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik in 1965 etc.). In 2004 the Leoš Janáček Foundation awarded the Janáček String Quartet the Commemorative Medal for the systematic propagation of the Czech composer in Czech and abroad on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Leoš Janáček’s birth.
