Jiří Chmelař - Selection of Photographs from the book Then Tenth Planet

At the Czech Centre in Prague an exhibition of artworks of the artist Jiří Chmelař will take place, which will present his fanciest photos from the book "Desátá planeta" - "The Tenth Planet" in the form of large-sized pictures.




The book „The Tenth Planet“, issued by the publisher Jerome, s.r.o., brought two artists together, Jiří Chmelař as photographer and Václav Jamek as author of original texts.


Jirí Chmelař was born in the year 1950 in Přerov. He studied at the University of Economics in Prague, work in foreign trade, later at then Ministerium for Foreign Affairs as diplomat. In the year 1980 he went into exile. Nowadays he devote his time wholeheartedly to visual arts.

Objects of his creative work are 3D-collages, scupltures, book objects, and foto-collages. His artworks were exhibited since 1980 in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Korea, Indonesia and many other countries. In the year 1997 he was awarded in France with the officer’s rank of the „Ordre des Arts et des Lettres“.


Chmelař’s artistic expression bases on surrealism. His creations are often comparable with those of Jan Švankmajer. Čhmelař identifies himself with the creative heritage of Jiří Kolář, particularly with the calm and systematical manipulation of prepared components. In the recent years Chmelař turned intensivly to fotographic composition, where  he uses the specific opportunities of collages given by the technique of overlaying pictures.




After the presentaion at the Czech Center Prague the exhibition will be introduced the french public as well at the beginning of next year.


Partner of the exhibition is the publishing house Jerome, which issued the book „The Tenth Planet“. During the exhibition it will be possible to buy this unique book.
