Little from the Fish Shop is one of the first Czech feature films utilizing digital and stop-motion puppet animation and even though the title is quite fairytale-like, the film itself is oriented to older audience. This touching free adaptation of H. C. Andersen’s The Little Mermaid moves the fantasy from the depths of the ocean to a not-so-fantastic port town. The youngest of the Royal family, Little, falls in love with a fishy owner of an even fishier love-shack, and how far this romance will go is not written in the stars, but rather in seaweed and the gray of the bleak docks. The story of unrequited love and man’s twisted values is accompanied by unique animation, expressive puppet design and imaginative, shifting soundtrack, and thus belongs among film acts with just little competition.
