Polka dance lecture led by Martin Vika and his parter Anna Vystydová.

It has never been easier to learn the Czech national dance in NYC. Join the polka dance mini-workshop from a dance master from one of the biggest dancing schools in Prague. Martin Vika is one of the best 12 couples in the Czech Republic. Come learn POLKA from a true professional!

The polka is originally a Czech dance and genre of dance music familiar throughout Europe and the Americas. It originated in the middle of the 19th century as a Czech peasant dance in Bohemia, now part of the Czech Republic. Historic folklore has it that a peasant girl named Anna Slezak invented the steps one day for her own amusement. The word “pulka” is derived from the Czech phrase for “half-step,” which refers to the dance pattern of lightly stepping from one foot to the other.
