Susanna Roth Translators Award 2020 – Call for Entries

Czech Centres and the Czech Literary Centre, a section of the Moravian Library, announce the 6th year of the International Competition for Young Translators – The Susanna Roth Prize, named after the celebrated Swiss translator Susanna Roth (1950 – 1997) who made a significant contribution to the promotion of contemporary Czech literature abroad.

The competition is open to young translators up to the age of forty*. The task is to translate a significant extract (cca 20 pages) of as yet untranslated contemporary Czech prose published in the Czech Republic between November 2018 and November 2019. Previously published extracts are unacceptable. A jury in each country taking part will select one winner.

Veronika Bendová was born in Prague in 1974. She studied scriptwriting and dramaturgy at the Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). She made her debut in 2012 with her novella Nonstop Eufrat which has been translated into Spanish. Veronika occasionally publishes short stories in magazines.

The translated text in English (pg. 22–39) from Veronika Bendová’s Vytěženej kraj (FRA, 2019) together with a short bio (up to 1,000 characters including spaces) in Czech, a current photograph with credits and a solemn declaration on the authorship of the translated text should be submitted via email to clarkova@czechcentre.org.uk. The deadline is 30st April 2020.

The competition is open to young translators up to the age of forty, excluding previous winners of the Susanna Roth Translation Competition. For details see Terms and Conditions.
