Zorka Ságlová @ Still I Rise: Feminisms, Gender, Resistance, Act 2

The acclaimed Czech artist Zorka Ságlová will be showcased in major group exhibition which looks and explores resistance movements and alternative forms of living from a gendered perspective across the world and spanning the late nineteenth century to the present.

With over 100 exhibits by some 40 practitioners, Still I Rise presents the way in which resistance has been approached by visual artists, writers, architects, designers and activists, working as individuals or in groups. It takes place within a global context, referring to recent women-led uprisings and demonstrations, including the global Women’s Strike initiated in the US, as well as the pivotal role women played in the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The necessity of freedom is also what characterises the work of Zorka Ságlová. During the normalization of the 1970s Ságlová was forbidden to sell or to present her art in public. That was the reason why she moved to open-air spaces where she organised land-art actions exclusively in the presence of her close friends. She is deemed one of the first artists who reflected land-art movement in Central and Eastern European region.

At the core of Still I Rise is the idea of collaboration, community building and egalitarianism. The gallery space will host discussions, workshops and performances, creating a site for participation and a platform for multiple voices. The exhibition is a collaboration between Nottingham Contemporary and the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill. It has been curated by Irene Aristizábal (Nottingham Contemporary), Rosie Cooper (De La Warr Pavilion) and Cédric Fauq (Nottingham Contemporary).
